I was sitting watching Hardball with Chris Matthews. He mentioned Bill Crystal's response to President Obama's perspective on war and the future role of the US as a world citizen. Once again, it is clear that the Neo-Cons don't get it. Crystal believes that winning a war is significant, no it is more than that, it is the most significant act for the United States.
The fact is that it is not significant at all, except to allow one to unilatterally impose one's will on the vanquished. Bill Crystal does not know that goal is impossible in the long term. One-sided settlements stop the actual fighting, but not the beliefs that created the percieved need to start the fight. So a residual force would be required to guarantee enforcement in perpertuity.
It hasn't worked throughout history when the fighting was done with bows and chariots and communication was done with runners. The prelude to the modern day marathon. We enforced our settlement in Iraq with some support. The same is true for Afghanistan. Now the US is war weary and if these wars with the insurgency continued we would be bankrupt.
But for the Neo-Cons, they are not done with complete victories that result in absolute submission of the armies. They ignore the resistences that still believe in their causes and will contiue to fight from the shadows. Enforcement of our will requires large residual forces. Someone must tell Bill Crystal that the Neo-cons still want to enforce their will on Syria, Iran, North Korea, and China. We will have full employment, but we will need immigrants to man one-hundred percent of the civilian jobs! I'm going back to watch Politics Nation.
