I'm not sure anyone is comprehending the magnitude of the problem that communication technology has presented to the world. Totally free speech, I fear, is going to become a victim by necessity. Our own media outlets sometimes spiel and tolerate misinformation. The restraint of decency an wisdom has become almost non existent.
Our own media is controlled, in some cases, by foreign corporations. It is no secret that personal political beliefs have resulted in the outright bastardization of the truth. I am not talking about perspectives, but outright lying. We evaluate the wreckage going on in the Arab countries; we conclude that they are ignorant and misinformed and this can be overcome by education and exposure to what is just and true. Nothing could be further from the reality that stares us in the face everyday.
In our own country we have watched outright misrepresentations of truth be pushed by our leaders and the institutions that are suppose to enlighten us. It wouldn't be so pathetic if it was done out of the true beliefs of the provocatuers, but it is not. In the state of Ohio, a third of Republicans believe the president is a muslim. But that is only half of that tragedy. The other half; why do they believe that being a muslim is something to be deplored? Because it is taught in America everynight on our televisions, and then reinforced by misguided political hacks to serve their own interests. Our morally challenged political leaders know that hate is a powerful motivator, and never hesitate to use it to political advantage.
If we really want to protect free speech, we, as world citizens must first agree that hate speech is a crime. If supported by deliberately untruthful information it can and will be prosecuted. That is not new in America we do this to protect individuals already. It is called liable, a civil penalty when it impacts groups it should be a criminal penalty.
